According to the data released by the German Federal Bureau of statistics on February 18, the trade volume of goods between China and Germany reached 245.4 billion euros in 2021, an increase of 15.1%. China has become Germany's largest trading partner for six consecutive years. The total trade volume between Germany and the Netherlands was 206.1 billion euros, an increase of 20.1%, and the Netherlands became Germany's second largest trading partner. The total trade volume between Germany and the United States was 194.1 billion euros, an increase of 13.4%, and the United States was Germany's third largest trading partner.
China is the most important import source country of Germany. In 1980, China ranked 35th among German import source countries and rose to 14th in 1990. Since 2015, China has become the largest import source country of Germany. In 2021, Germany imported 141.7 billion euros from China, an increase of 20.8%. Germany imported 105.7 billion euros from the Netherlands, an increase of 21.5%, and Germany imported 72.1 billion euros from the United States, an increase of 6.5%. The Netherlands and the United States were the second and third largest import source countries of Germany respectively.
The United States has become the most important export destination of Germany since 2015. German exports to the United States reached 122.1 billion euros in 2021, an increase of 18%. Germany exported 103.6 billion euros to China, an increase of 8.1%, and 102.3 billion euros to France, an increase of 12.6%. China and France are Germany's second and third largest export destinations.
In 2021, Germany's trade surplus with the United States was 50 billion euros, ranking first, with a surplus with France of 400 euros and a surplus with Britain of 33.3 billion euros. France and Britain ranked second and third respectively. Germany's trade deficit with China was 38.1 billion euros.
After brexit, the total volume of goods trade between Britain and Germany decreased to 97.4 billion euros in 2021, a decrease of 4.6%. Britain fell from seventh to tenth in the ranking of Germany's most important trading partners, and became the lowest ranking since Germany had foreign trade statistics in 1950.
In terms of commodity categories, data processing equipment, electronic and optical equipment are the most important imported commodities of Germany, with automobiles and auto parts ranking second and chemical products ranking third. Automobiles and auto parts are the most important export commodities of Germany, with machinery and chemical products ranking second and third respectively.
