In 2021, China's timber (raw timber volume) import volume was 96.5149 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 10.65%. Among them, the import volume of logs decreased by 1.45% year-on-year, and the import volume of sawn timber decreased by 22.04% year-on-year. At present, some changes have taken place in China's wood industry and home furnishing industry. The import structure proportion of logs and sawn timber has changed. In the future, the import volume of logs will decline and the import volume of sawn timber will rise. In recent years, some finished products such as wood-based panel, OSB and wood structure materials are in an increasing trend.
Russian timber exports to China:
As we all know, the relationship between Russia and Ukraine is tense. Europe and the United States have imposed sanctions on Russian timber, defined it as "conflict timber", and removed it from the certification system of FSC and PEFC, which may cause great trade difficulties for Russian timber. However, in March, Russia's timber exports to China increased by 1.5% year-on-year to 998100 cubic meters. According to lesprom analytics, the value of exports increased by 14.9% to US $227.7 million. The average price of timber rose 13.1% to US $223.1 per cubic meter.
From January to February this year, the foreign trade situation between China and Russia is consistent with the overall foreign trade situation of Russia. Russia's import and export to China increased significantly, which is not a unique phenomenon of trade with China. According to the statistics released by the General Administration of Customs of China, the trade volume between China and Russia increased by 38.5% year-on-year from January to February 2022, reaching US $26.431 billion. Among them, China's exports to Russia reached US $12.618 billion, an increase of 41.5%; China imported US $13.813 billion from Russia, an increase of 35.8%.
Some experts believe that the foreign trade situation between China and Russia from January to February this year is consistent with the overall foreign trade situation of Russia. The sharp growth of imports and exports to China is not a unique phenomenon of trade with China. Although Russia Ukraine relations remain tense, this does not limit global trade flows. The growth of Russian timber to China in March is expected to continue to rise in the second quarter.
